Description:

The Gallery began operation in 1994 but traces its origins back to 1989 when Suherwan Abu and Alan Wong began to amass a private collection of contemporary Indonesian artworks. Several years later, the initial investment paid off and the artists represented by the Gallery gained acclaim.

In 1994, the Gallery was opened with a new partner YM Tunku Nina Mansur and its first show by Javanese painter Rachmansjah received critical acclaim.

The Gallery aspires to be an avenue through which art can be shared, experienced and enjoyed. Already the Gallery has an excellent reputation as a location for dinner parties, cocktails and of course, an art gallery with a difference.

Conveniently located just off the LDP in Kelana Jaya, Reka Art Space offers exhibition space and art classes, and accepts portrait commissions.

"Reka Art Space aims to dispel the sense of exclusivitiy often associated with art by establishing a space that is more open and communal in nature," says owner, Chee Sek Thim, a KL-based artist and theatre practitioner.

The gallery itself focusses on artists who have previously been outside the collector's circuit. These include artists with special needs, fresh graduates, and artists who have not actively exhibited their work before.

Art classes are also offered in the adjoining studio at Reka Art Space. Packaged with the working adult in mind, the classes offered are structured as short 4-week modules.

"My aim is to make art and the experience of art making, one that is non-intimidating and accessible to all," says Chee, who has been an art educator since 1990.

The last decade has seen an explosion in demand for Asian art and antiques. This is partly a reflection of the region's dramatic economic advance, but also a sign that a new breed of art collector exists here. These collectors are dedicated to Asia's heritage, and not just yesterday's treasures like Ming porcelain or jade. Contemporary artists offering dynamic new interpretations of old cultural traditions are also enjoying new found attention and much admiration.
